ReAktion is a self-made band from Chili formed in 2010. They are set apart by their unique metal, alternative rock, electronica mesh, and profound intellect. They released their first demo LP, Be(lie)ve in Re(evol)ution independently in 2011. 2012 brought more success with a trip to Canada to meet with Gggarth (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers) to begin production. Slipknot’s Sid Wilson contributed to the production of their song 10 Steps to Success in 2013. In February Sid began managing ReAktion.

ReAktion released their new album, Selknam, October 21st. The single Synchro was released in September. It has a strong emphasis on unity with lyrical examples such as “everything is connected,” “everyone is connected,” and “there is no way to explain this.” It is open for interpretation, but I feel they may be referring to the domino effect of social and environmental conditions, as this is a focus of the band. Maintaining the status quo, the disposable mentality of people, and or the lack of concern for others comes to mind. It is, without a doubt, politically motivated.
My top pick is track 12, Enter the Fourth Dimension. The intrepid instrumentals, shifting vocals, and metaphysical lyrics will draw you into this song. To me, the fourth dimension is the world I have created for myself. It is my positive thoughts, my voice, my contribution to society, my actions, and my lack of fear that will change the world with my “every thought and every breath.” This song hit close to home for me. I set a goal for myself to help make a difference in the world. The lyrics, “Be what you desire…don’t hesitate to live…don’t be afraid…don’t lose yourself.” empowers me to continue pursuing my goal to create a better world. I like to think I am already a part of ReAktion’s fourth dimension due to my profession.
Track one, untitled, must be mentioned even though it is only one minute and thirty seconds. The metal and rock components layer fantastically with the electronica sound. The spoken lyrics at the end, “I think nothing can be written to times. I think you can be free. I believe in the Anarchy that rules over my being. I believe in my revolution.” depicts the lyrically individualistic tone of the album and reflects ReAktion’s core beliefs.
Track 11, Across the Universe, also deserves a remark. The primary message, in my interpretation, is the power of words. They travel fast and can cause mass destruction. People hear and read words through media outlets and do not question the story that is being told. This leads to misinterpretation, confusion, and misguided facts. The massage to me is clear; question everything.
I was very impressed by ReAktion’s brave approach to political issues. Selk-nam people were one of the last aboriginal tribes to be encounter by Europeans in Chili (their home country) and culturally assimilated. ReAktion holds firm beliefs related to individuality. I feel the album title adds to their message of independence. I appreciated linking the [possible] metaphorical meanings behind Selknam and attempting to interpret the philosophical inclinations of ReAktion as a band. This album gets a much deserved 10 out of 10 and the band deserves mad respect for unapologetically stating their bold values and beliefs throughout this album.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
