Yes, Clutch, the one and only, released a new album the beginning of October. To the " fans since the beginning" , it was a painfully long wait, to more recent fans, this album shows them what made Clutch such a staple in the Heavy Metal/Hard Rock community for so many years. There is not a mediocre song on this latest musical offering , it is almost like 2013's "Earth Rocker" and 1995's self titled album had a baby and the band named it "Psychic Warfare".
The album is chocked full of the good ole metal rockabilly blues we have come to expect from this Maryland based band, with solid guitar riffs and gritty vocals by co founder Neil Fallon. Tracks like "X-Ray Vision" Sucker for the Witch" and "Decapitation Blues" grabs the listener by the boo-boo and demands attention. The lyrics are thought provoking, yet not over the top politically suffocating. Track #4, "A quick Death in Texas" is just pure wonderfully wicked dark humorous good ole boy fun. How can you not fall insanely in love with a song that talks about how "Her husband was the GM of a Tractor Supply"?
I had already been bitten by the love bug and was ready to change my name to "Mrs. Skullgurl Metalchick Psychic Warfare", when track #7 started to play and bled into track #8. "Doom Saloon & Our Lady of Electric Light", are the kind of songs I think all songwriters wish they could create. Let me just say that if the hair on your arms doesn't stand up and you get a mad case of the goose bumps when you listen to these two tracks back to back, then you my friend, are a zombie. (On a side note though, thank you for taking time out of your busy "planning the Zombie Apocalypse" schedule to listen to the new Clutch Album, and to read this review). Track #12, "Son of Virginia", had almost the same effect on me, with the addition of the mental picture of sitting on a dilapidated porch in a swamp.
So what else can I say about this album? Nothing. It is amazingly amazing. It is masterfully written and executed, this the craft of song writing at its best. Plain and simple. ~Skullgurl Metalchick`
