Hello again to my readers. Well it's been a long time since the band i'm reviewing for has released an album. Six years to be exact. This band happens to be my favorite band in the world. That being said my standards and expectations were extraordinarily high. The band is Breaking Benjamin and the album is their recently released “Dark before Dawn”. Enjoy!
“Dark before Dawn” is the highly anticipated follow up to 2009's “Dear Agony” by iconic rock band Breaking Benjamin. The band has put all the legal issues behind it and came out swinging with the most talented and diverse line-up to date. Keith Wallen formerly of Adelita's way and Copper takes over as guitarist and backup vocals. Former Red member Jasen Rauch is also on guitars. Shaun Foist, formerly of Picture me Broken shows off his talent while keeping the arrangements true to the Breaking Benjamin name.
After listening through this album at least a dozen times it was easy to understand why it hit #1 on the billboard charts. Every Breaking Benjamin album has a certain flow and unique sound to it. Dark before Dawn combines all the elements of the previous four albums into one. To call this release a masterpiece is selling it short. For years I have been telling everyone that Ben Burnley is one of the greatest song writers of all time. The band met and exceeded my high standards for music quality. The album sounds so smooth as all the layers mesh to perfection. Lyrically this album may be the best from Ben to date. The trademark hook is definitely present in Dark before Dawn as well.
“Ashes of Eden” is my hands down favorite song on this album. Ben always did have a way to write music that touches the deepest parts of the soul. This is that type of song; a somber heart felt ballad that gives me chills even after listening to it over a dozen times. The lyrics are so deep that it almost makes time stand still for that moment.
“Angels Fall” is another favorite of mine. Phobia meets We are Not alone in this signature sounding tune. This should be the next single released by the band. Fans will fall in love with this song immediately, as it features a very powerful hook.
Simply put, Dark before Dawn is a masterpiece and went above and beyond my high expectations for a Breaking Benjamin album. The new line-up seems to have re-energized Ben and the six year layoff gave him a lot of time to focus and come out with the best album yet. Fans of Breaking Benjamin and fans of great rock music with character should run out and buy this album immediately. This will certainly be a contender for album of the year. Breaking Benjamin is back and they are going to be on top for many years to come. I give this album an insane 10 out of 10 horns \m/
