Karyn Crisis, a figure who should need no introduction especially those familiar to the mid-90′s NY hardcore scene, is finally at it again. After much spiritual guidance and inspiration she, along with husband Davide Tiso, will be releasing Karyn Crisis’ Gospel of the Witches ‘Salem’s Wounds’ on March 24, 2015 through Century Media Records.
Karyn, formerly of the NY based Crisis, had remained mostly inactive in music since their breakup in 2004. She spent most of the next five years focusing on art and spirituality. During 2008 and 2009 a relationship formed with Tiso from an initial intent to begin a solo project. However, as he progressed on tunes while they were in Italy she realized that she was not ready for vocals. This project was taking on a much larger message than she was ready for. Eventually it developed into somewhat a tale of circumstance or consequence of the plight of witches though time, but also the resurgence and strength that remains long after. Maybe I’m overstepping on that explanation but it’s what I gather from it.
With Karyn on vocals, Davide on guitars and bass, Charlie Schmid on drums, and Ross Dolan and Mike Hill on backing vocals; they are all at once heavy, melodic, dark, and ethereal. She is able to growl with the best and then sing like a siren. The atmospheres created by Davide merged with her vocals are amazing.
The rythmic plodding almost entrances you on “Alchemist” while twisting through multiple vocal ranges from Karyn and her cohorts. The central focus of the album comes from “Aradia”, which is not only the fourth track, but Karyn’s own spiritual guide and guardian. She is known to have been a Goddess of the “Ancient Ways”, which is also a track on the album. The instrumentation is always on point no matter how the range or feeling shifts throughout. I cannot wait to see what they look like live.
The time they took and the spiritual connection they needed to make this happen has paid off. You will be hard pressed to find another album you can listen to from beginning to end regarding these concepts and have the feeling and passion clearly expressed to the point where you either feel it yourself or feel something missing. Overall I give this 9/10 \m/
